Jim Kipping, Jimbo to many, has had many studio setups where ever he's lived before. From small closets, to a full extra bedroom converted with custom cabinetry. From mobile rigs with a laptop and balance audio card with a pro microphone when he's out of town and never wants to be away from a gig or audition. Enter his new space. An 8 acre piece of land he has been developing for over 10 years now. When purchased, there was no electricity, no running water, no cable, or phone. There were also no structures on it either.
First things first, build the garage with the mindset that the upper floor would one day be his studio. Next, sell house in town, and move INDO said garage which is only 380 square feet, very spacious by New York city standards, then store most of everything they had for two and a half years while they build the house. A three story Italian/Tuscan farm house which has been called the most authentic in the country. Did we say he and his wife contracted that themselves too?? Check that out at www.PoggioSecco.com.
Now that the house is complete, it was reno time for the “studio.” Complete with voice booth and control room, the new home office studio is now complete. This time all by Jim's lonesome. Everything from installation of the real maple hardwood floors, to the electrical, communications and audio pathing. The studio was wired completely from the ground up at construction time with cat6 networking cable, RG6, XLR snakes and 27 pair control, phone and audio distribution cable throughout, just as a commercial post house would be. Couple that with the ISDN capabilities, a point Kipping checked with the local telco to make sure was available even before the property was purchased, turbo speed Internet connectivity and even fiber between the house and studio, its any wonder his property doesn't glow at night.
With neighbors like Willie Nelson, a member of the Dixy Chicks and movie Director Robert Rodriguez as neighbors. This was the perfect place to land a home and custom VO studio and Post House. Jim is not just a voice-actor and sound designer, his building & electrical skills have help him greatly in his 25+ years in the industry. He builds his own computers too. Currently eyeballing a dual quad chip board (8 processors) with 16 gigs of ram for his next recording rig.

“It's the most custom and comfortable space I've ever worked in,” Jim says, “and to look back and say.. 'yea, we did that' makes each gig landed that much sweeter. I love this place. AND it's paid for, nothing is financed. I'm glad that the gigs I keep landing help support my voicing and recording gear habit!”
